SPRING 2010 TREND
Beautiful Brunettes!
Yes, brown is the HOT color for this spring. Celebrities such as Nicole Ritchie and Fergie to name a few, are standing out in the crowd, trading in their salon blonde for rich luscious hues of brown. Book your Browning at the Michael Z Salon and see for yourself how the right browning techniques can enhance your eye coloring and add a natural glow to your skin.
You are going to see lots of volume, volume, volume, texture and curls this spring.
I’ve already been talking to some of my clients about body waves to to help them achieve the soft wave styles that are emerging this spring. Styles are freer in movement so for some of my clients, teaching proper usage of products along with education on blow drying and curling iron techniques are essential for that “Just stepped out of the Salon” look. Short textured pixie cuts are a rage for that “I don’t have time to do my hair in the morning” client.
Color will play an important role in achieving that ‘volume’ look. Browns are beautiful and shiny with glosses. Redheads are more vibrant. Blonds will be asking for Baliage (hand painted) natural color placement techniques.
Fine Hair Booster
One of the biggest mistakes women with fine hair can do is to grow their hair below the shoulders. Add an oily scalp to the equation and you end up with a clearly defined part that exaggerates the sense of less hair.
Last night I had a client in the Salon that wanted a boost to her fine hair. She was a level 7 blond with shoulder length hair. After a lengthy consultation, we both decided to add a heavy 2 color lightening weave following the pattern of hair growth and to cut the hair shorter with my shear and razor cutting method. Voila, perfect boost without a defined part.
Spring trend for hair ‘Beach Waves’
Yes, you have seen it on magazine covers and the celebrity red carpet.
This springs hottest new look for long hair is the ‘Beach Wave’. It’s an amazing new service you can only get in the Salon. This service lasts up to 3 months and promises to deliver loose undefined soft waves. The ‘Beach Wave’ is a gentle formula containing no thio and is safe to use on color treated hair.

How to boost your fine hair!!!!!
An average head of hair has about 100,000 to 150,00 strands of hair. Seeing that fine hair has considerably less than the 100,00 note that fine hair should never extend below the shoulders for most bounce and movement. Gravity and improperly placed products can weigh the hair down if it is longer than the shoulders, showing more scalpel area contributing to the perception of less hair on top. Adding all over hair color along with some dimensional coloring techniques can boost the hair shaft up to 10%. Follow with a great haircut, proper placement of styling product, correct use of styling tools and you too can achieve the results you’re looking for.
Flat iron and Split ends (trichoptilosis)
January 4, 2010 · Leave a Comment · Edit This
- It never surprises me when I have a new client sit in my chair and the first thing they comment on is why do they have split ends when all they do is flat-iron their hair. Pandora’s box is now opened.
- First I begin by informing the client that a good flat-iron can easily reach 450 degrees. HANDLE with CARE. Think of toast as dry and brittle.
- How often do they shampoo and what do they use? Fine or oily hair can benefit from daily shampooing but be diligent about not rubbing and scrubbing the mid shaft and ends. Dry hair or curly hair can skip daily shampooing. Next I check out the surfactants (cleansing agent) in their shampoo. The following are some examples surfactants in shampoos with 1 being the harshest. *1-Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate very, very, harsh *2 -Ammonium Laureth Sulfate very harsh * 3-Sodium Lauryl Sulfate a little harsh *4-Sodium Laureth Sulfate mild, *5-sodium myreth sulfate gentle. Some surfactants are salt compounds and the foaming agents are necessary to cleanse. Sodium Myreth sulfate is more expensive and used in a lot of facial cleansers because of its gentleness. This is the tip of the iceberg information on shampoos, I’ll be updating a new shampoo post as soon as possible.
- Do they condition in the shower and do they deep condition?
- How do you dry your hair before using the flat iron? You got it, it’s own post!
- Do you use proper products to protect the hair before applying heat? Post, Post.
Already have split ends? The darker the hair the worse it looks. Scissors, need to trim a minimum 1 1/2 inches up the hair shaft from the split end. Let it go too long without a trim at regular intervals and you will find you need to cut off considerably more than you anticipated. Chemically treated hair needs extra attention to avoid the dreaded split ends.
I love my long hair 2010 New Year’s resolution

Long hair requires special treatment to maintain a healthy, shiny and smooth look. You took the time to grow it out, now take the time to care for it.
1. Schedule regular trims to keep those nasty split ends off the ends.
2. Purchase proper shampoo and conditioners for your particular hair type or combination of hair type. Don’t skimp on time when it comes to rinsing out the shampoo, any residue left in the hair can cause dryness. For those scalding hot water lovers, remember you need to cool the hair down to close the cuticle for a smoother comb out.
3. Use extra precaution when combing out wet hair. Spray a leave in conditioner to the ends and use a wide tooth comb starting at the ends and working your way up to the scalp. If the comb gets stuck, pull it out and start over again from the ends, lightly spraying on more leave in conditioner as needed. Avoid getting excessive amounts of conditioner on the scalp, this can weigh the hair down and leave you with a flaky scalp.
4. Don’t be a hot speed demon with the blow-dryer. Set it on medium heat and dry pointing the nozzle from scalp to ends to close the hair cuticle. Closing the cuticle promotes the shine and deters split ends. Check your brushes periodically for nicks and missing pieces. I’m talking about the brushes with the balls on the tips of the bristles where the balls have vanished into thin air. Those exposed naked bristles can tear the hair, time to chuck it and purchase a new one. Better yet, invest in a good natural boar bristle brush. Keep your brushes clean!
5. If you like to flat-iron or curl, your need to protect your locks from heat damage. Consult with your hairdresser for recommendations and get a lesson on the proper usage of the tools.
6. Sun worshipers and chemical lovers risk irreparable damage with extensive sun exposure. Use protective UV products and try to minimize baking your hair in the sun. Ever wonder why those beautiful highlights turned white?
7. I shall not wear a pony tail 24/7. If the short hair look staring back at you in the mirror is all you see everyday, and all you do is constantly complain about the lack of time for proper maintenance and styling of ‘Long Hair” then make the decision to cut it. Better yet, if you can spare 10″ of non-highlighted hair, donate it to www.lockoflove.org. and make a child’s wish come true.
