The surface of a strand of hair is called the cuticle. This outer coating protects the cortex:the heart of a strand of hair. A healthy cuticle is smooth allowing light to reflect incredible shine and the strand of hair is soft to the touch. Chemical processes and the excessive improper use of heat appliances without any protective product barrier can ruffle the cuticle resulting in a dry and damaged appearance of the hair shaft:split ends,breakage.

A stand of fine hair is smaller with fewer protective outer cuticle layers thus requiring  more maintenance than medium or thick hair. A trim every 6-8 weeks is highly  recommended.
