Flat iron and Split ends (trichoptilosis)

  • It surprises me how many  new clients  sit in my chair and begin their conversation with complaints of split ends.  First I want to emphasize that a good flat-iron heats up to approximately 450 degrees, think of bread in your toaster, dry and  brittle. Secondly after shampooing, before flat ironing they blow-dry from ends to scalp opening the cuticles rather than scalp to ends in  the direction of the hair shaft which closes the cuticles.
  • That brings me to shampoo.  Surfactants are what cleanse the hair.  Check the ingredients and see if it is gentle, like Sodium Myreth Sulfate
  • With new clients  I ask them if they use a styling product to protect their hair from heat damage, I usually get a blank stare.  The styling products also aid and memorize the desired effect be it straight or curly.
  • Split ends. Nothing takes away from a beautiful hairstyle then a mass of split ends.    The darker the hair the worse it looks. I haven’t found a product yet that can repair a split end except the scissors. If  you are thinking of getting your own the scissors out, be sure to cut approximately 1 1/2 inches from the ends to ensure your getting the split that may be traveling up the hair shaft towards your scalp.  Keep up your hair trims at regular intervals to avoid the ‘got to cut off at least 3 inches’ quote from your hair stylist.

How to make fringe appear bolder

One of the tricks I use to make the fringe area appear bolder is to take a slice just under the fringe and color it 2 shades darker with a demi-permanent color. Drop the rest of the freshly cut  fringe over the slice and voila!

Blowdrying for fine hair

Blow dry the hair from root to ends to eliminate fly-aways and frizz.  For that optimum silky look ,  start by applying a thermal styling  spray to damp hair.  Next apply tension to the hair shaft with your choice of a paddle or round brush then follow the brush with the blow-dryer while drying. This will result in a sleek style as you are smoothing and flattening the cuticles. Do NOT, I repeat Do NOT turn the head upside down and point the blow-dryer at the ends unless a frizzy look is what you want to achieve!

Spring 2012 Hair Coloring

As the temperature begins to rise, we at the Michael Z Salon are getting ready to warm clients up with rich dark chocolate browns and deep mahogany reds. Spring will be the season to celebrate brunettes and redheads! Brunettes will be stunning in vibrant shades of seasonal colors created by carefully placed high lights. Redheads will glow with vitality that will certainly turn heads.

Baby Boomers defying age

In this economy everyone needs to put their best image to work. When you show up to an interview,  what does gray hair say about you? My clients on the job hunt,  have been calling the salon to give themselves a boost and edge in this competitive market by scheduling for hair coloring. Color in a box can leave your hair dull, brittle and worse yet, lack of controlled coverage. The professionals have a better understanding of the complexities of gray coverage.
